Does an AC Help Improve Indoor Air Quality?

Depending on the type of air filter you get for your central air conditioner, your unit can help to boost indoor air quality significantly. But it really comes down to the steps that you take as a homeowner to improve indoor air quality.

You can keep reading to learn more about the ways that you can help your air conditioner maximize indoor air quality improvements. Then give our team a call any time you need health AC services or even air conditioning installation in Cicero.

Choosing an Air Filter

If you want your air conditioner to do the most when it comes to improving indoor air quality, you really have to select the best air filter possible. This can be trickier than you think, because there is such a thing as an air filter that is too highly rated.

Most central air conditioners don’t have the power to pull air through a very dense filter that captures smaller particles. We usually recommend that you select an air filter with a MERV rating in the range of 8 to 13. This usually means that your air filter removes a significant number of harmful particles from the air while still being breathable enough that airflow can pass through without putting a strain on your system.

Changing the Air Filter

But even the best-rated filters won’t be as effective if you don’t change them out on time. When you purchase your air filter, it will have a recommendation for how long you can expect the filter to last before needing to be changed out. Usually, filters are rated last for somewhere between one and three months, although sometimes they can last a little bit longer.

It’s a good idea to use a pen or marker to write the current date on your air filter when you put it in place. Then, set some kind of reminder so that you won’t forget to change it out. If you ever forget exactly when you put the air filter in, having the date on the side will clear up any doubts or questions.

Other Ways to Boost Indoor Air Quality

You can also keep up with vacuuming and dusting as much as possible. We know that life is busy, and sometimes it can be difficult to keep up with these regular household tasks. But vacuuming and wiping down surfaces goes a long way toward eliminating some of the dust in your home from ever even making it to your air filter to begin with, ultimately making your air filter and your AC itself more effective.

A cleaning regiment can be a great way to remove dust and contaminants from your home before they reach your air filter. And if you change your air filter regularly, you’ll be keeping your home fresh and clean for longer.
